的 National Association for Mental Illness (奈美) defines self-harm or self-injury as “hurting yourself on purpose”.  心理健康 professionals sometimes refer to self-harm as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which may help to distinguish some self-harm 行为s from actions that involve an intent 结束自己的生命.

 

Reasons some people may engage in self-harm 行为

For some, self-injury may provide a temporary sense of relief. 的 杰德基金会 reports that “self-injury usually develops as an attempt to cope with emotional distress, 和 some people [self-harm] when they feel overwhelming sadness, anxiety or emotional 麻木. This 行为 is also sometimes used as a form of self-punishment, 和 a way to outwardly express inner pain.”

Self-harm may emerge from a normal desire to:

  • regulate or cope with difficult or painful emotions, 和
  • experience a greater sense of agency.

  • Identify internal 和 external factors that activate distress 和 contribute to self-harm 行为.
  • Strengthen 和 practice a broader range of coping skills for experiencing 和 regulating difficult emotions 和 to interrupt patterns of negative thinking.
  • Choose specific coping strategies that reliably help to manage different sources or 痛苦的类型.

Coping skills to manage or reduce distress:

  • Non-competitive exercise / gentle physical fitness
  • Expressive activities that are soothing or playful – coloring, painting, using clay
